Earth Hour was originally conceived by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) and The Sydney Morning Herald in 2007 as a way to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change.
Earth Hour is now a global event organised by WWF that encourages households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and other electrical appliances for 1 hour on the last Saturday in March annually.
Since 2007 Earth Hour has become a global event with 88 countries and 4088 cities taking part in 2009.
