One of the reasons for starting Piko was to provide an outlet for organically grown produce -vegetables, grains, beans, dried fruits, nuts, herbs and spices. Hans, the co-operative's full-time worker at the time, grew most of the vegetables on empty sections in the Avon Loop area.
We have a commitment to certified organic food at Piko.
All of our fruit and vegetables are certified organic unless there is a problem with availability. If so we may then stock uncertified organic these are clearly marked as such.
We have been decreasing non-organic stock with organic as it becomes available. The reason we also stock non-organic products relates to some of the original aims of the co-op:
Providing cheap wholefoods: for some staples the difference in price between organic and non-organic is quite high, so we provide a cheaper option on some products.
Providing food for people with allergies: not all gluten-free etc. products we stock are available organic.
